There are many types of writing styles that you can choose from, below are just a few examples:
The world of writing can be a very confusing and frustrating place when you first start out, because you may not be sure of what your style of writing is or what kind of writer you want to become.
Even after you have decided what type of writing style you want to pursue, you have to than decide what genre or subjects you want to write about. The list is never ending because it’s based on interests and there are literally millions of interests.
The first step is to decide what kind of writing style you want to pursue. (This is not to say that you can’t pursue multiple styles, but it helps to stick to one, once you have identified it as your preferred writing style). Pick a writing style that resonates with you and comes naturally to you.
When I first started writing, my writing style was very businesslike, because of my experience as a business analyst working in the corporate world. I automatically started writing in this style, but soon realized it wasn’t the type of writing style that I was attracted to.
Then I turned my thoughts onto the possibility of writing a novel, it seemed like everyone was talking about writing a novel, than why not me? So I started writing my novel, but I felt very uncomfortable with this type of process of creativity, it didn’t seem to resonate with me. I don’t think I was cut out to be a novel writer, not at this stage of my writing career anyway.
Eventually I started writing non-fiction using my own personal experiences as my source. This was what I loved doing and this was what resonated with me the most.
The point is that you need to experiment with your writing to find out which writing styles are right for you. It may take a number of iterations before you identify a writing style that resonates with you the most.
You may want to start reading other authors and their styles to see if you are attracted to their styles of writing.
The second step is to identify the genre or subjects that you want to write about. Think about the following questions to help you find a genre:
What are your interests?
What do you like reading about?
What are your hobbies?
What TV shows do you watch?
What type of movies do you like?
What do you dream about?
What writers do you admire?
You can have multiple interests and that’s ok, because the beauty of writing is that it allows you to write about all of your interests. For example my interests are Personal Development, Islam, spirituality and Writing, I write about all these things. So don’t let having multiple interests distract you away from writing.
Once you have decided your style of writing and the genre you want to write about, than start writing. Don’t worry so much about the commercial aspects of your writing at this stage, the main purpose is to discover what your preferred writing style is and that genres you are comfortable with, which can only be done through the experience of writing.
